Every five years, The Netherlands celebrates Liberation Day on May 4. On that day, presentations are given at homes that were lived in by Jews before World War II, recognizing that only 10% of Dutch Jews survived the Holocaust. By sheer coincidence, Fred Polak, a child of Dutch concentration camp survivors, was scheduled to be in Amsterdam on May 4 when the presentations were given. Fred, who frequently speaks about his parents’ experience, gave a presentation on lessons to be learned from the Holocaust at the home his mother grew up in. It was a very moving experience for Fred, as well as his sister, his daughter and her husband, who also attended.
